Cullinan Diamond Mine - 763 meters underground
Kimberlite is a volcanic rock that sometimes contains diamonds. It is found as cones, from the ground surface down to 2 or 3 km. That is why diamond mines, unlike gold mines, are vertical. They are dug along the kimberlite pipe until the pipe diameter becomes too narrow to make the mining cost-effective at this depth.
