Griqualand
The area, Griqualand West, as it was called in the XIXth century before the creation of the Union of South Africa, is home to the Griqua people. They are semi-nomadic Afrikaans-speaking people, classified as "Coloured" under Apartheid, who find roots in the intermarriages between European colonists in the Cape and the Khoi already living there.
